Cox, Vice President of AI models and head at the joint MIT and IBM artificial intelligence laboratory, underscored the importance of transparency in innovation, particularly in the current AI landscape.
The IBM executive pointed out the multifaceted nature of openness in artificial intelligence, contesting the two-dimensional view of the concept. He pointed out the expanding network of accessible frameworks from multiple providers, including industry leaders, research centers, and nation-states.
However, he expressed concerns about the quality of openness in many Large Language Models, noting that a number of them deliver little more than a set of numerical values without transparency in their production methods.
